How does the protection of human subjects approval process work?

In a nutshell, you:

  1. Write out an application packet including description of what you are going to do and how you are going to do it.
  2. The Human Subjects Committee takes a look at it and requires (often small) changes where needed to eliminate risks to the subjects of the research and to make sure that subjects understand what is entailed in the project and can provide informed consent (where appropriate).
  3. The edited proposal is checked and ideally is approved to be implemented.

Starting July 1, 2002, you will also need to take a quick tutorial on the issues around Human Subjects.
