During an August 2002 review of the Bloomington SOTL program, a group of IU faculty members involved in SOTL recommended the establishment of a society for SOTL. A small committee at IU recruited a diverse international founding committee for the new society, and it began operation in March of 2003. All but one of the first 50 individuals asked agreed to serve on the committee.

The Mission of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) is to foster cross-disciplinary and intercultural inquiry into the character, conditions, and possibilities for powerful learning and teaching at the post-secondary level and to disseminate application of these educational practices.

Recognizing the importance of parallel efforts within each discipline, within the scholarly community, and within earlier levels of education, ISSOTL actively encourages those efforts. Further recognizing the fundamental importance of enriching new lines of inquiry and of insights and generalizations that can apply across disciplines, ISSOTL actively encourages cross-disciplinary conversation and synergy. ISSOTL is especially interested in expediting the flow of new findings and applications across national boundaries and in fostering collaboration among scholars in different countries.

To accomplish this mission, ISSOTL will

  1. support parallel scholarly and disciplinary societies and campus
    programs;
  2. increase opportunities for international and cross-disciplinary
    idea exchange through conferences and work groups;
  3. provide access to a variety of resources through internet sites and
    journal publication.
