Giving to the Department
In these times of budgetary uncertainty, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese has benefited from the generosity of our alumni and friends who, through annual or one time gifts, have provided the Department with a modest endowment that allows us to offer our students a limited number of competitive entrance fellowships, research fellowships, grants for travel to professional conferences, scholarships to pursue study-abroad and dissertation completion awards.
Entering our sixtieth year, we seek additional gifts that will help us boldly realize our potential as one of the top Spanish and Portuguese departments in the world. Donors may choose to make unrestricted gifts that would help with various departmental needs, from funding the many colloquia and international conferences we host, to paying for research travel for graduate students and faculty. Such gifts can be made in any amount, are greatly appreciated and contribute positively to the growth, stability and renown of the Department.
We are also seeking funds for annual and/or endowed scholarships and fellowships. These can be designated according to the wishes of the donor, and be awarded to undergraduates or graduates, for merit and/or for need. For annual scholarships or fellowships, donors may choose to make a yearly gift in the amount of the award. An alternative to the annual gift is an endowed scholarship or fellowship which generates interest to support an annual award. Funding for endowed scholarships begins at $50,000 and for fellowships at $200,000.
A transformative way to assist the Department would be the establishment of an endowed professorship or an endowed chair. These endowed lines would provide us with the ability to attract and/or retain faculty members of the highest international distinction in research and teaching and whose title would be named to reflect the wishes of the donor. For an endowed professorship, the funding level is $750,000; for an endowed chair, it is $1,250,000.
