Graduate Studies
Indiana University´s graduate programs in Spanish and Portuguese offer both a solid professional preparation and the opportunity for an auspicious time of intellectual growth and exploration. The faculty's expertise spans many fields of study and theoretical approaches, often informed by a multi-disciplinary perspective. Many of our faculty members hold joint or adjunct appointments or have affiliated status in other campus units including Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Latino Studies, Chicano-Riqueño Studies, Comparative Literature, Gender Studies, West European Studies, American Studies, Medieval Studies, Renaissance Studies, Linguistics, Second Language Studies, Communication and Culture, and Cultural Studies.
Our graduate students, coming from a plurality of ethnic and national backgrounds, are closely mentored in the program and leave with a solid degree that prepares them for a vibrant academic career. To facilitate their lifelong success, the Department offers professional workshops and colloquia on publishing, teaching, and interviewing. In addition, a monthly series of works-in-progress presentations allows graduate students to ready themselves for conference participation. Travel funds are available to students to present their papers at conferences in the US or abroad. Among other activities, the Graduate Student Advisory Committee (GSAC) welcomes new graduate students to the department and hosts the annual Graduate Student Conference at IU each Spring.
The excellence of our graduate programs is founded in part by the institutional resources of Indiana University. The Main Library holds nearly 7,000,000 volumes and its Hispanic Studies collection is one of the best in the nation.
