M.A. in Hispanic Literatures
Requirements
- 30 credit hours in the department: a minimum of 4 courses must be in Spanish literature at the 500 level with the remaining courses taken at the 500 level or above.
- Up to 2 courses in either Catalan or Portuguese culture and literature may be counted.
- Reading knowledge of an approved second foreign language.
Final Examination
A six-hour written examination broken into three sections:- Essay (3 hours)
- Textual Analysis (1 1/2 hours)
- Identifications (1 1/2 hours)
M.A. in Hispanic Linguistics
Requirements
- 30 credit hours: 21 credits of departmental coursework, 9 credits of elective coursework (in or out of the Department). Students are encouraged to explore their interests outside the department.
- S425, Phonetics, or the equivalent (may be fulfilled from previous work).
- 9 hours may be from other departments and indeed students are encouraged to explore their interests outside the department.
- Reading knowledge of an approved second modern foreign language.
Final Examination
A six-hour examination in three fields selected from the following options:- Syntax
- Pragmatics
- Sociolinguistics
- Phonology
- Second Language Acquisition
M.A. in Portuguese
Requirements
- A minimum of 30 credit hours in graduate-level courses, at least 20 credit hours of which must be in departmental courses. A thesis (1-6 credits) is optional. With the approval of their advisor, students may take up to 10 credit hours of coursework in a minor field.
- Reading knowledge of an approved second foreign language.
Final Examination
- A six-hour written examination broken into three sections. The exam format is similar to that of Hispanic Literatures.
M.A. Final Examination Overview:
Hispanic Literatures, Hispanic linguistics, and Portuguese
- Six-hour written examination, based on a reading list, and a one-hour oral examination if the written warrants it. Both must be passed at least two weeks before the end of the semester in which the degree is to be granted. Students must demonstrate a good command of oral and written Spanish language on the examinations. There are separate reading lists for students in Hispanic Literatures, Hispanic Linguistics, and Portugeuse. Exams are held the first Saturday in April and November.
Note: Admission to the M.A. program does not imply that once the degree is received, the student may automatically begin work for the Ph.D.; the department will decide in each case.
