Doctor of Philosophy
Ph.D. in Hispanic Literatures
Requirements
- 90 credit hours required for graduation:
- 60 credit hours of departmental coursework, minor coursework, and M.A. transfer credits (up to 30 credits); remaining credits (roughly 30) completed by Ph.D. thesis hours (S805).
- Two foreign languages or one in-depth language.
- One minor area (at least 12 credit hours)
- Some recommended fields include American Studies, Anthropology, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, English, French, Gender Studies, General Linguistics, History, Italian, Latin, Latin American Studies, Medieval Studies, Philosophy, Portuguese, Renaissance Studies, and West European Studies.
- Some recommended fields include American Studies, Anthropology, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, English, French, Gender Studies, General Linguistics, History, Italian, Latin, Latin American Studies, Medieval Studies, Philosophy, Portuguese, Renaissance Studies, and West European Studies.
- One departmental seminar (S708); S512, Theory and Criticism, or its equivalent; 18 credit hours in Hispanic Literature (excluding S504, S512 and S517).
Qualifying Examinations
The qualifying examination will consist of three parts: 1) 2 three-hour written exams; 2) an exploratory paper; 3) and an oral examination. The oral examination will be scheduled after the successful completion of the written examinations. In addition, a written or oral examination may be required in the minor field, at the discretion of the minor department. The qualifying examination may be repeated only once. Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics
Requirements
- 90 credit hours required for graduation:
- A minimum of 63 credit hours of departmental coursework and M.A. transfer credits (up to 30 credits); remaining credits completed by Ph.D. thesis hours (S805).
- Coursework will be divided into three areas (please contact the Department Graduate Office for the number of credits required for each area):
- Major area of concentration
- Second area of concentration
- Third area of concentration
- Two modern foreign languages or one in-depth language
- At least one 700-level seminar
- At least three 600-level courses in Hispanic Linguistics
Qualifying Examinations
Students will take a written examination in each of the three areas of concentration, followed by a 2-hour oral exam once all areas of the written have been passed. Students will have one week to complete each portion of the written eaxm and these exams will be taken in series. Each individual portion of the written exam will be no more than 30-pages in length, although the format of the questions themselves varies at the discretion of the examiner. The sequence of exams must be completed within the same semester.
Ph.D. in Portuguese
REQUIREMENTS
- 90 credit hours required for graduation:
- Work in the major, secondary, and minor fields must toal 75 credit hours in courses and seminars in addition to completion of a doctoral dissertation. Students' programs are individualized and depend on the approval of the graduate faculty in Portuguese.
- 75 credit hours of departmental coursework, minor coursework, and M.A. transfer credits (up to 30 credits); remaining credits (roughly 15) completed by Ph.D. thesis hours (P805).
- Two foreign languages or one in-depth language.
- One minor area (at least 12 credit hours)
- Writing samples
QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS
The qualifying exam will consist of two written exams of six hours each and an oral exam, if the written exam warrants. Students concentrating in Portuguese will also be examined in Spanish or another approved secondary area of interest. The written examination is 12 hours. A written or oral examination may also be required in the minor field, at the discretion of the minor department. The qualifying examination may be repeated only once. All students will be held responsible for both a literary period and a genre to be chosen from the following lists:
- Genre: Prose, Drama, Poetry
- Period: Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries.
In addition to the Lusophone area, students will normally choose either Spanish, America, or the Spanish Peninsula as a second area. Students should make their selection of areas in consultation with their advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies.
