Graduate Studies

Language Proficiency

To fulfill the University Graduate School’s language proficiency requirement in Spanish, Portuguese, or Catalan, please fulfill one of the following:

Spanish

  1. By completing, with a grade of B (3.0) or better, the reading course S492. Students may register for the first course in the sequence, S491, to prepare for S492; those who feel they have sufficient preparation may register for S492, though they should consult the language advisor first. S491 & S492 are offered only in summer.
  2. By receiving a grade of B (3.0) or better in an IU Spanish course numbered S300 or higher in literature, linguistics or culture (excluding individual readings).  The course must be taught in Spanish.
  3. By achieving a score of 62 or higher on the GSFLE (Graduate School Foreign Language Exam).  For registration and exam information, please contact the office of BEST (Bloomington Evaluation Services and Testing). For practice questions, please visit their website.

  4. In order to qualify for In-depth Spanish language proficiency, the student must first establish proficiency by any of the methods listed above (1-3).  Once having established proficiency, the student must pass a course numbered S500 or higher with a grade of B (3.0) or better.  The course may be in literature or linguistics and it must be taught in Spanish.

Portuguese

  1. By completing, with a grade of B (3.0) or better, the reading course sequence P491 and P492. As with Spanish, students may register for the first course in the sequence, P491, to prepare for P492; those who feel they have sufficient preparation may register for P492, though they should consult the language advisor first.
  2. By receiving a grade of B (3.0) or better in an IU Portuguese course numbered P300 or higher (excluding individual readings). The course must be taught in Portuguese.
  3. In order to qualify for In-depth Portuguese language proficiency, the student must first establish proficiency by any of the methods listed above (1-2). Once having established proficiency, the student must pass a course numbered P500 or higher with a grade of B (3.0) or better (excluding individual readings). The course must be taught in Portuguese.

Catalan

  1. By receiving a grade of B (3.0) or better in an IU Catalan course numbered C400 or higher (excluding individual readings). The course must be taught in Catalan.
  2. In order to qualify for In-depth Catalan language proficiency, the student must first establish proficiency by the method listed above. Once having established proficiency, the student must pass a course numbered C500 or higher with a grade of B (3.0) or better (excluding individual readings). The course must be taught in Catalan.
