  • Undergraduate Spanish major and recent IU graduate, Rachel Geissler (BA ’13, Spanish and Anthropology) was awarded a prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Mexico for 2013-2014. Rachel was one of just a handful of awardees out of more than 50 applicants for this highly competitive program. During her time at IU, Rachel served as a peer counselor at the IU Office of Overseas Studies and as an undergraduate teaching assistant in the Department of Anthropology. Rachel’s interests in language and culture also led her to Oaxaca, Mexico for a 1-month anthropology field school; to Amman, Jordan for a 1-month course on Middle Eastern politics, religion, and culture; and to Lima, Peru for a semester abroad at La Pontífica Universidad Católica del Perú where she completed coursework (in Spanish) on Andean archaeology, Amazonian ethnography, and Peruvian politics and history. While studying in Bloomington, Rachel also served as a volunteer and tutor for El Centro Comunal Latino. Rachel graduated with a 4.0 grade point average and with Hutton Honors College general honors notation. We congratulate Rachel on all of her accomplishments and wish her all the best in Mexico this coming year.
