New Faculty Member
We are very pleased to welcome Professor Ryan Giles (PhD University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Professor Giles specializes in Medieval and Renaissance literature and culture in an Iberian context. His research focuses on Castilian, Latin, Portuguese and Catalan texts, with an emphasis on connections between folklore, material culture, iconography and various types of prose and poetic genres including sermons, oaths and parodic hagiography.
Professor Darlene Sadlier is recipient of the College’s 2012 Distinguished Faculty Award

Sadlier, Professor of Spanish and Portuguese, began her career at Indiana University in 1978. She has been director of the Department's Portuguese program for 32 years. Her books cover a wide range of subject matter that includes Lusophone literature, history, film and art.
Professor Kimberly Geeslin receives GSAC Faculty Mentor award.
- Professor Kimberly Geeslin received the 2012 Spanish and Portuguese Graduate Student Advisory Committee Faculty Mentor Award in recognition of the diligent guidance and extensive support she has provided for graduate students both in and beyond the classroom.
Fafulas wins NSF dissertation enhancement award

- Doctoral student Stephen Fafulas was awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation grant to support his dissertation research on second language acquisition under the supervision of Professor Kimberly Geeslin. Undergraduate Spanish major and recent IU graduate, Rachel Geissler (BA ’13, Spanish and Anthropology) was awarded a prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Mexico for 2013-2014.
