The SPEA Alumni Association Scholarship had more than 120 applicants with three recipients selected in 2012. The award offers $1,000 for exceptional SPEA undergraduate or graduate students on both the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses. Applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.0, good references, and a compelling essay. Below is biographical information and statements from the three recipients of the 2012 SPEA Alumni Association scholarship.
President of Sorority Kappa Delta, Merit Scholarship recipient, and Dean’s List awardee, Kate Calvert is an undergraduate student at SPEA Bloomington and works as a marketing assistant at IU Recreational Sports. “The SPEA Alumni Association Scholarship allowed me to enhance my classroom learning by completing a summer internship. The scholarship covered my expenses for the summer, allowing me to gain experience in the arts management field without having to worry about my finances, which was a great help!”
After 25 years in the workforce in positions including production assistant for Entertainment Tonight and public relations assistant manager for Six Flags Great America, Kathy Pataluch returned to pursue a higher degree at SPEA Indianapolis. “I have worked in the arts for 16 years and have been volunteering with a social services agency for over four years. Tuition fees are challenging for a single person, especially one who would like to take 6 credit hours per semester. The scholarship provides the means by which to do so. In addition, the scholarship is a validation of the quality of the work I have been producing to date. I am honored that the Alumni Association recognizes my leadership skills and chose to support my professional initiative.”
After graduating with honors from Skidmore College in environmental science, Carolyn Raider taught photography abroad with National Geographic Student Expeditions before pursuing a dual master’s degree at SPEA Bloomington. “I cannot express my gratitude and elation upon receiving a SPEA scholarship this past semester. Beginning graduate school one year after finishing my undergraduate degree has meant starting my ideal program with limited funds. This scholarship has not only eased my financial burden, but has given me a renewed inspiration. I thank and continue to be grateful for the donors' generosity.”
