Master of Arts in Arts Administration

*Practicum information - Scroll Down*

Internship Guidelines

Each student is required to complete a 280 hour internship for the MAAA. These internships give students an excellent opportunity to apply classroom theory and techniques to real-life experiences. Students should register for AADM-Y750 either in the summer between their second and third semesters, or in the spring following the third semester in the program. Before registering, students must submit an internship contract with the Career Development Office (SPEA 200) for approval. To obtain credit, students must complete all required paperwork.

International Internship Guidelines

International students completing their MAAA must meet with an advisor from the Office of International Services prior to beginning practicum and internship work. Students will have to apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) in each semester that they will complete practicum and/or internship work. Arts Administration requires immediate participation in Curricular Practical Training, and therefore a request for CPT must be made to the Office of International Services (OIS). A student may begin CPT only after receiving his or her Form 1-20 with an endorsement from an advisor at OIS. For more information on CPT, please visit http://www.indiana.edu/~intlserv/students/f-1/employment/cpt.php. You may also call OIS for assistance at 812-855-9086.

AADM-Y750 Internship

The internship is worth 3 credit hours and shall consist of at least 280 hours in an arts-related organization.

The internship may be taken after the completion of two semesters of course work (during the summer following the first academic year) or after the completion of all three semesters of course work (during the spring semester of the second academic year).

Students are responsible for submitting TWO pieces of paperwork.
• SPEA Internship Contract: To be submitted online (see directions below) prior to starting internship.
• SPEA Internship Summary Report: To be submitted online when the internship is completed.
Internship supervisors are responsible for submitting ONE piece of paperwork at the conclusion of the internship.
• Supervisors will complete an evaluation of the student's work. The evaluation is available online and is not available for students. An email is sent to the supervisor when the student's internship is approved that provides the supervisor with the online link along with a unique username and password to login and submit the form.
The AADM-Y750 grade will be posted when all reports (Contract, Summary, and Evaluation) are received by Career Development and reviewed.
If the student is doing the internship in the spring of the second academic year, before leaving campus for the internship the student should:
• Complete the Application for Advanced Degree form for graduation. The electronic application may be submitted online through OneStart or you may pick up the form from and return to the Arts Administration office (see Megan Starnes for assistance).
• Register for AADM-Y750 Internship and at least 1 credit of AADM-Y550 Practicum so the student is registered in the spring semester as a full-time student with 4 – 6 credit hours.
As students seek and obtain arts internships, please schedule an advising meeting with SPEA Career Advisors. Appointments can be scheduled at the front desk of the Career Development Office by either dropping in or calling, Career Development Office – SPEA 200, 812-855-9639. Feel free to schedule meetings with SPEA Career Advisors (through Dana Samson) during your time in the MAAA program for internship and networking guidance and assistance with career search strategies.
SPEA/MAAA Internship Paperwork Instructions

Practicum – AADM-Y 550

A practicum project is designed to give hands-on managerial and administrative experience through three (3) fifty-hour internships with a professional arts organization on campus or in the community. During the practicum the student is expected to work approximately 10 hours/week for 5 weeks, or about 50 hours on the project in total.

To complete a practicum project:

  1. Make contact with an arts organization to design a five-week project of eight to ten hours per week. Email a brief proposal of your practicum to Megan Starnes, Program Coordinator (merflynn@indiana.edu). Include the name and contact information of the person with the organization who will supervise your work, give time frames of the practicum and describe the project. Practicum projects are subject to approval.
  2. Provide a final report, two to four pages, describing the completed project including what you accomplished and challenges you may have faced. Attach copies of any work such as flyers, proposals, programs, etc. that you may have contributed to the project. This final report should be submitted within two weeks of the project's completion, and you will prompt your supervisor to provide their evaluation at this time.
  3. Your supervisor will provide the program with a written supervisor evaluation of your practicum work. This can be an email report to Megan Starnes, merflynn@indiana.edu. Your practicum project will be complete when all documentation is in your student file.
  4. At the completion of all three of the practicum experiences, the student receives a grade of S. It is recommended that the three practicum experiences be completed in different venues and in varying positions. For broader experiences, it is also recommended that practicum projects be designed outside of the organization or department where the student is working in a paid hourly position or assistantship.
  5. Students normally wait to enroll in the AADM-Y550 Practicum (1 -3 credits) at the same time they register for the Y750 Internship (3 credits). *Please note that you can register for all three practicum credits at once or during separate semesters. If the student opts to do the Y750 Internship in the summer between their 1st and 2nd year, they may also register for the Y550 Practicum at that time to ensure adequate hours to qualify as a full-time graduate student. Practicum projects can be done at any time during the three academic semesters of the MAAA program or during the summer.
