To receive internship credit, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  1. You must be admitted to SPEA.
  2. You must have taken and successfully passed the class component of BE252/267 (V252/H267), Career Development and Planning. Some SPEA students are exempt from this requirement if they have taken previous career planning coursework. For information about exemption, please call the Undergraduate Programs Office at (812)855-0635.
  3. You must be registered for V381 or H466 (Heath Administration). Students exempt from V252/H267 must register themselves for V381/H466 in the section number provided in their acceptance letters from the Undergraduate Programs Office.
  4. You must possess a SPEA core/major GPA of 2.3 regardless of SPEA credit hours obtained and a cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  5. You must have at least sophomore class standing.

Guidelines for Submitting Internship Documentation
You must follow these steps for submitting required internship documentation:

  1. Before you begin your internship, complete the SPEA Internship Contract. To access this form, you must use your IU username and password. This form must be approved by the Office of Career Services before you can begin logging hours at your internship site.
  2. If you wish to pursue elective credits, please read the information provided below and contact the Office of Career Services, (812) 855-9639.
  3. Prior to the final week of your internship, remind your supervisor to submit the Supervisor Evaluation Form online.
  4. During the last week of your internship, complete the online Internship Summary Report. To access this form, you must use your IU username and password. When your Summary Report has been successfully submitted, you will see a page that says "Form Confirmation". Print a copy of this page for your records. You are responsible for saving all paperwork and email correspondence. If there is no documentation from you or the Office of Career Services, no appeal will be heard.

SPEA does not award credit for internship hours completed BEFORE a SPEA internship contract has been submitted and approved. The maximum number of internship contact hours that can be accumulated and counted for credit during one week is 40 hours. SPEA does not recognize or give credit for any hours accumulated beyond 40 over any one-week period.

Elective Credit Option

Please contact the Office of Career Services, (812)855-9639, if you wish to pursue elective credits. Keep in mind that elective credits must be taken during the semester you are interning and will be charged to that semester's bursar if your internship is approved. Elective internship credits must be stated at the beginning of the internship and cannot be added, increased, or decreased at a later date.

You can receive one elective credit hour for every 80 hours that you work in your internship past the original 200 hours required for V381. The maximum number of credit hours you can register for in a semester is 6 credits 1 credit of V381 (BE252's internship component) and 5 elective credits. For any and all elective internship credit desired after you have completed your requirement for V381, you must intern 120 hours for the first credit and 80 additional per credit that follows.

To pursue elective credits, students must meet the requirements listed above and follow the steps below:

  • Speak with a SPEA academic advisor to ensure that elective credits are needed to complete the SPEA program
  • Contact the Office of Career Services, (812)855-9639, to begin the course authorization process to register for V380
  • Fill out an Internship Contract
  • Upon the approval of the contract, you will receive an email instructing you to register for V380 - You are responsible for registering yourself for the credits, you are not automatically registered!
  • Complete your internship and fill out an Internship Summary Report (see step 4 in "Guidelines" above for further instructions)

Please contact the Office of Career Services, (812) 855-9639, if you have questions regarding the internship process.
