John Zody (BSPA’01)
These days, there seem to be only three words uttered inside the beltway—health care reform—and with a boss who is the leader of the Blue Dogs and a big voice in the health care debate, John Zody, Rep. Baron Hill’s (IN-D) new Chief of Staff, has been christened by fire.

The Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) will sponsor the 42nd semester of the Washington Leadership Program for the fall semester 2010. Offering 30 IU students a leadership development internship opportunity, the program welcomes all majors at IU Bloomington and SPEA students on all IU campuses.

As a Washington Leadership Program participant, you will live in nearby Silver Spring, Maryland for the semester and work in the nation's capital. The program allows students access to challenging and unique internships, which in turn provide them with professional experience and contacts. It also allows students to live and work in Washington in a safe and fun environment, alongside their fellow Hoosiers and with the guidance of an IU faculty member.

In addition, this unique internship experience offers an academic component. Two required seminar courses are taught by a SPEA resident faculty member. Both 400-level SPEA classes, they increase students’ understanding of the federal government, politics, and current events. They also challenge students to think about their government in new ways.

The internships will provide the opportunity to apply classroom theory to real-world activities and develop new professional skills. You can expect to fully participate in office life, attending meetings and special events, performing research, writing reports, preparing briefings, and participating in a variety of other tasks. The program has a strong tradition of making students superior candidates for public and private sector jobs.
