Message from the Dean

From its beginnings in 1972, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs –known to all as SPEA—was a pioneer in higher education. Ignoring the boundaries of disciplines by marrying public administration and policy analysis with environmental science, we at SPEA challenged ourselves and our students to think about society’s most pressing problems in innovating interdisciplinary ways.

The result was a unique educational experience that produces graduates who can think critically and also grasp the interrelated nature of issues in framing solutions.

As Dean of SPEA, it is a privilege to lead one of the most innovative and nationally acclaimed institutions in our fields. Only a handful of schools can boast of our national rankings. Our graduate master’s program in public affairs claims second place out of some 250 programs. Our Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index ratings place us in the top 10 in both environmental science and public administration.

Today, SPEA faces a challenge in continuing to assemble a world-class faculty and exceptional students who make our communities stronger. Competition for the very best faculty and students is more intense than ever. Your investment in our School enables SPEA to assure that top minds –both scholars and students –will select SPEA.

We invite you to become our partners in preparing leader who share our commitment to smart policy, sound science, and stronger communities.

John D. Graham, Ph.D.
