SPEA Students Make Large Donation to Bloomington Program for Kids
Bloomington, Indiana --
As children from across Bloomington gathered to play and study at the Boys and Girls Club, two students from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University Bloomington reached for their checkbook.
Lisa Ahrendt and Eric Campbell are officers in SPEA’s Graduate Student Association. Every year, the group holds what it calls a Soiree for Service. It’s a party and a fundraiser and this year the location for the soiree was the club for kids on Lincoln Street in Bloomington, a few blocks from the IU campus.
Executive Director Jeff Baldwin says the club serves about 300 children a day at its three facilities in the Bloomington area. Some children practice for a choir or play basketball or ping pong while others are tutored in math and reading.
The children pay an annual membership of only $20 but the true cost of the services they receive is many multiples of that. “These are children who couldn’t have access to a facility, to sports teams, to tutors, to a safe place to go after school if it weren’t for donations,” Baldwin tells Ahrendt and Campbell.
In his hand as he speaks is the check for $800 that Ahrendt wrote. It is all the money raised by the Graduate Student Association at one memorable night but it will help scores of children for days to come.
