Q: Who will be there? Can anyone attend?

A: Experience Day is geared towards anyone interested in the SPEA Masters programs. As many of our current students will share, it was their visit to IU that really brought clarity to their graduate school choice. Plus, you'll get to enjoy the feel of a day on IU's campus - considered to be one of the top five most beautiful campuses in the country.

Q:  How can I get to Bloomington?

A:  If you are flying into the Indianapolis International Airport which is just a mere 50 minutes away from the Indiana University-Bloomington (IUB) campus, shuttle service directly to IUB is provided by the Go Express Travel or Star of America Shuttle Services. For driving directions, visit http://admit.indiana.edu/visit/directions.shtml.

Q: Where do I stay in Bloomington?

A: Bloomington offers a wide variety of hotels. In these hotels, SPEA has reserved a few rooms at discounted rates. For information on other area hotels, please click here.  We suggest you book your hotel rooms early.

Additionally, we will have a limited number of opportunities to be housed with a current student. We will send out a Preference Form to all RSVPed Experience Day attendees where you may indicate your interest to be housed with a current student. We recommend that you book a hotel just in case we are unable to accommodate your current student housing request.

Contact speainfo@indiana.edu if you have any questions about the “Preference” process.

Q: When will I receive a schedule of the day's events?

A:  All attendees will receive a schedule early in the week of Experience Day. The sample schedule on this website should give you an idea of the Experience Day events and timeline. It is recommended that you plan for a full day (8:00am-5:00pm) schedule. More details are forthcoming.

Q: Where will I park?

A: Follow the directional signage that will read "SPEA Parking" and will be posted along the roadways/entrances in and around the gateway corridors to the SPEA Building. Please, be mindful that there is road and building construction in and around the campus. Thus, you may need to exercise patience and choose to take an alternate route. Specifically, you will be unable to turn onto Fee Lane from 10th Street. We offer this interactive campus map.

You are welcome to park in the Fee Lane Parking Garage on Fee Lane just off of 10th Street; we'll provide you with a free visitor permit for use upon exiting the garage (please take a parking ticket as you enter-you won't need a parking pass until you exit).  You will see signage indicating "SPEA Parking" in and around the SPEA Building and garage entrance. We encourage you to park in the Fee Lane Garage on the 4th floor for easy access to the sky bridge which leads to the SPEA building.

SPEA's building address is:

1315 East Tenth Street

Bloomington, IN 47405

Q:  Is there a fee to attend SPEA's Experience Day?

A:  Experience Day is FREE to all attendees who have filled out the reservation form and received a confirmation.

Q:  May I arrange individualized meetings with faculty, staff or other departments in SPEA/on IUB’s campus during Experience Day?

A:  SPEA recognizes that faculty and staff may prove influential in helping you decide which graduate school is the best fit for you. This said, SPEA has involved many of our faculty and staff in the planning and implementation of the comprehensive Experience Day schedule. Thus, we would prefer that individualized meetings not be arranged on Experience Day. These meetings tend to disrupt the schedule designed purposely to offer a full SPEA experience that includes interaction with faculty, staff and our student community.  You may pursue these exchanges on alternative days or even via other mediums (i.e., online chats, email, Skype).

If you are a prospective dual degree student (i.e., Law, Area Studies, Physics, Chemistry), we are happy to offer contacts in another department for you to arrange individual meetings outside of SPEA’s Experience Day schedule.

Q:  Do you offer any travel stipends for Experience Day?

A:  While the activities during Experience Day are free, we are not able to pay for flights, lodging, or "other" incidentals. We will also have limited housing options with current students available to help guests save on the costs associated with hotel accommodations upon their visit.

Q: What do I wear?

A: As you are finalizing your preparations for travel and packing, please know that business casual attire is appropriate for all events and comfortable shoes are recommended.

SPEA's Auction and Gala is a cocktail attire event.

Bloomington is spectacular in spring with flowers that depict the City’s namesake “BLOOMington.” Weather is unpredicatable during these seasons, however. Please check the weather forecast prior to your visit here.

Q: Can I bring anyone with me?

A: We understand that family, friends and significant others may join you in Bloomington.  However, SPEA Experience Days are individualized visits for prospective students only.  We can offer information on local attractions and landmarks, which may help those that choose to accompany you stay busy while you experience SPEA.  The Convention and Visitors Bureau of Monroe County offers additional, helpful information.
