AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates
![]() |
SPEA VISTA Fellow Theresa Meyers (left) created a healthy garden mix to distribute to children and families at the food pantry. “My summer VISTA experience, where I developed, ran, and evaluated youth programs in community gardens, enabled me to provide sytematic improvements to the youth programs in the gardens and at the pantry so that children could learn about healthy eating and local food systems in more effective (and fun!) ways. The SPEA VISTA program ensured that I would have meaningful work assigned to me and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard did a fantastic job integrating me into the organization.” |
The SPEA Summer Associates program is hosted by the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at Indiana University-Bloomington (IUB) and is affiliated with our undergraduate program. SPEA’s Summer Associates program is offered through a unique partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service, the only of its kind with an undergraduate program. This program is designed to provide SPEA students with a summer of valuable experiential learning within the context of nonprofit organizations dedicated to food security and educational policy issues.
Program Structure
Each SPEA Summer Associate serves a 10-week, full-time term as an AmeriCorps VISTA member working on projects in the state of Indiana that enhance programmatic efforts and increase an organization's ability to serve the needs of the local community.
SPEA Summer Associates are selected through an application and interview process. Summer Associates receive a living stipend of approximately $2,200 total, paid biweekly. Following completion of the 10-week term of service, Associates will also be given the choice between a $1,200 education award and a $250 cash stipend. In addition, Associates will receive valuable professional experience and fulfill their respective degree program experiential requirement.
Student Eligibility
Current and graduating SPEA undergraduate students are eligible to apply for the SPEA Summer Associates program.
In accordance with AmeriCorps VISTA program regulations, all applicants must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the U.S., and must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.
