New SPEA Grant to Focus on Hybrid Diesel Engines

SPEA has received a new $140,000 grant from Navistar Corporation, a Chicago-based engine supplier that supports benefit-cost analysis of hybrid diesel engines for application to urban pick-up and delivery vehicles. Although a diesel engine can be highly fuel efficient, combining electric propulsion with the diesel engine has considerable promise. SPEA Dean John Graham will serve as principal investigator. Professor Kerry Krutilla was instrumental in supplying intellectual leadership to secure the project. Two SPEA graduate students have also been hired to assist in the effort. The project will be completed by June 2009 and is aimed at a journal publication.
