Multi-Level Governance in a Globalized World: Concepts and Applications (6 cr.)

May 16 - June 13, 2015

Spend four weeks studying and executing an applied research project linked to Policy, Governance, and Management in Barcelona, Spain, a city already famous for its unique combination of climate, history, culture, and art. Yet, Barcelona also presents, in a single location, the full range of complex governance issues and problems found in transnational, national, sub-state regional, and local arenas operating in a globalized world. As a result of studying and living in the midst of a great case study, you will have the chance to learn how an ordinary Mediterranean seaport transformed itself into the front ranks of urban areas and continues to project its entrepreneurial and innovative culture into the 21st century.

Who May Apply:

Both undergraduates at the end of their sophomore year (or older) and graduate students in good standing are eligible to apply for admission. Undergraduates should have at least a 2.8 GPA. While preference and scholarship money will be given to SPEA students, the course is open to undergraduate and graduate students from any related IU department. The syllabus calls for more difficult assignments and higher research expectations placed on graduate students in comparison to undergraduates.
