The Midwestern Regional Center (MRC) for Global Environmental Change is
located at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA). The Center
is one of six regional centers of the National Institute for Global
Environmental Change (NIGEC). The MRC is an interdisciplinary, multi-investigator
program studying the causes and consequences associated with global environmental
change, particularly climate change due to human modification of the atmosphere.
MRC operates a computing laboratory for the application of geographic information
systems (GIS) and remote sensing in environmental science and natural resource
management. GIS is a computer-based information technology that is designed to
manage, analyze, and display spatial data. The GIS Laboratory assists students,
staff, and faculty with analysis and modeling of environmental problems. GIS
generated maps are used by resource managers, landuse planners, and government
representatives to make informed decisions concerning the use of natural resources.
