Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen

For continuing students enrolled in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs



Thank you for your interest in SPEA’s scholarships. This year’s application deadline was 5:00 p.m., Friday, January 23, 2009.

The scholarship amounts are estimates and actual amounts will be determined in May of 2009.


A. James Barnes Scholarship
Established to honor A. James Barnes, SPEA's dean from 1988 to 2000, for his twelve years of leadership and loyal service. The scholarship was created to enable students to engage in nonpaying or low-paying internships in public service in either the public or non-profit sector.
Amount: $1,600
Eligibility:
  • Undergraduate or graduate students
  • Demonstrated leadership potential
  • Strong interest in a career in public service

David P. Charlesworth Memorial Scholarship
Established to honor the memory of David P. Charlesworth, a distinguished, successful graduate of the School, who loved life and helping others. The scholarship will allow David to continue to help others by assisting students who are working to put themselves through school.
Amount: Up to four scholarships of $2,500 each
Eligibility:
  • Undergraduate student
  • Employed at least 20 hours per week
  • Financial need

Jesse Devitte Disabled Student Scholarship
Established as a tribute to Senator Bob Dole, friend and mentor of SPEA alumnus Jesse Devitte. The scholarship honors Dole, who was disabled during World War II, by supporting a student with a physical disability.
Amount: $1,000
Eligibility:
  • Undergraduate or graduate student
  • Student with physical disability

Jesse Devitte Endowed Scholarship/Fellowship Fund
Created by SPEA alumnus Jesse Devitte, BSPA 1980, to honor a student who is a parent and who is also working his or her way through school. The award recognizes outstanding dedication as well as provides financial support.
Amount: Up to $1,500
Eligibility:
  • Undergraduate or graduate student
  • Student must be employed
  • Student must be a parent
  • Financial need

Janet Gray Hayes Scholarship
Established to honor the achievements of Janet Gray Hayes, the first female mayor of a major U.S. city. The scholarship assists students pursuing careers in the field of public service.
Amount: Up to $1,000
Eligibility:
  • Undergraduate student
  • Interested in a career in public service
  • Record of academic achievement
  • Financial need
  • Preference given to women

J. Scott Hollenback Memorial Scholarship
Established by friends and family to honor the memory of J. Scott Hollenback, a talented SPEA alumnus. The scholarship supports undergraduate students in the field of public health.
Amount: Up to $2,000
Eligibility:
  • Undergraduate student
  • Public health degree
  • Financial need
  • High academic standing

The Indiana Society of Hazardous Materials Management Scholarship
Established to encourage those in the study of environmental waste as encouraged by the ISHMM.
Amount: $500
Eligibility:
  • Undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in SPEA Bloomington
  • Interest in the study of environmental science, environmental waste or study related to hazardous materials
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Maintained academic excellence of 3.0 GPA or above
  • Preference given to student from State of Indiana
  • Student must provide a resume of educational course work and relevant work experience and be willing to present to the ISHMM on a relevant area of research

Efiginia Lao Rhodes Tirado International Scholarship
Established to recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of Efiginia Lao Rhodes, for her journey to this country and the development of an extremely successful family and life, and to advance SPEA’s Global Initiatives efforts.
Amount: $2,000
Eligibility:
  • Undergraduate enrolled in SPEA Bloomington
  • Plans to study in an Asian country as part of an educational experience
  • Preference given to a person with financial need and/or to a person who is part of an underrepresented population on campus
  • Travel within 12 months

John W. Ryan Scholarships
Established by Indiana University President Emeritus John W. Ryan to help promising students achieve their educational goals. Scholarships are awarded based on merit and financial need to students pursuing a career in public affairs and/or environmental science. Preference is given to students who submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member with their application.
Amount: Up to $2,500

Schuchman Family Scholarship in Resource Conservation and Recycling
Established by Larry Schuchman in honor of the family’s long-time commitment to resource conservation and recycling. The Scholarship assists undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in the fields of recycling and solid waste management.
Amount: Up to $2,500
Eligibility:
  • Undergraduate or graduate student
  • Financial need
  • Preference to students interested in a career in resources conservation, recycling, and/or solid waste management.

Izaak Walton League Scholarship
Established by the Izaak Walton League of America - Indiana Division to encourage students in the field of conservation. The scholarship supports undergraduate public affairs (BSPA) students with a concentration in environmental management, or Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (BSES) students.
Amount: $1,000
Eligibility:
  • Indiana resident
  • Major in environmental management or BSES student
  • Junior standing
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • Preference given to members of the Izaak Walton League

SPEA Alumni Association Scholarship
The School of Public & Environmental Affairs (SPEA) Alumni Association is proud to sponsor three $1000 scholarships for current SPEA students. The scholarships will be awarded to two undergraduates and one graduate student, from any IU campus, who meet the following qualifications:
Amount: Up to three scholarships at $1,000 each
Eligibility:
  • Current SPEA student, to complete your final year of school in the academic year 2009-2010.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0, you must provide transcript to show proof of academic status. Unofficial transcripts may be submitted, but will be verified for accuracy
  • Completion of a 1-2 page essay on why you should be awarded this scholarship. Highlight your merits/achievements, including academic success, public and community service, and extracurricular activities.
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from a SPEA faculty member or a community leader. Letter should be addressed to the SPEA Alumni Association Board of Directors.
  • Complete the applicant data form.
