IU Campus

A blend of nationalities distinguishes the graduate student body

Indiana University has, since the end of World War II, developed and fostered a powerful international perspective. IU offers more foreign languages than any other state university, including Tibetan, Mongolian, Uzbek, the Turkic languages, Creole, Estonian, Japanese, Arabic, and Azeri. It is possible to obtain a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship in some of these languages to finance your way through graduate school.

IU pioneered overseas study in the 1940s and continues to have an extensive program of international opportunities. The area centers on campus include Central Eurasian Studies, Russian and East European Studies, African Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Indian Studies, East Asian Studies, Near Eastern Studies, and West European Studies. The School of Public and Environmental Affairs offers joint MPA/MA degrees with many of these departments.

Unsurpassed research and library resources to advance your studies

The Indiana University Herman B Wells (Main) Library features a reference collection of more than 3 million volumes, with research collections in languages, literature, religion, philosophy, history, classics, sociology, psychology, political science, economics, anthropology, gender studies, and criminal justice.

Special collections in the Wells Library focus on such areas of the world as East Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Russia, and Eastern Europe. Comprehensive science collections in chemistry, biology, and geology are in branch libraries throughout the campus.

The government publications collection in the Wells Library features more than 1 million documents issued by foreign governments, international organizations, and United States federal, state, county, and city governments. Additionally, most publications of the United Nations and the European Union are in the collection.

The in-house library shared by the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Kelley School of Business, with 180,000 volumes, is one of 14 specialized collections on campus. Nearly 600 new book titles are added each month, and more than 1,700 periodicals and journals are available in the collections on accounting, business economics, business history, environmental management, finance, government, health care, management, policy, and public administration. The library is one of the most advanced electronic connections to public affairs information in the country, offering CD-ROM indices and online services with electronic references, abstracts, and full-text articles on environmental, health, social science, and business topics.

On the Edge of Technology

Computers are the link between students, faculty, research centers, and libraries across the IU campus. In the School of Public and Environmental Affairs/Kelley School of Business complex, the university maintains more than 150 computer workstations for student access, fully supported with applications and Internet access, laser printers, and digitizer equipment. Across the IU campus, there are more than 3,000 computer workstations and 50 specialized computer labs, including desktop publishing and Silicon Graphics labs.

In the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, our Geographic Imaging Center includes state-of-the-art technology and individual workstations to offer students the most advanced capabilities. The GIS laboratory, operated by the Midwestern Regional Center for Global Environmental Change, is one of six national centers focusing on regional environmental science and natural resource management. The technology in the facility manages, analyzes, and displays spatial data for scientific and policy research.
