Presidential Management Fellows

Welcome to the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program
Answering the Call for Leadership

A program for students graduating this academic year with any interest working in the federal government.

Exceptional students interested in public service and meeting masters or doctoral-level degree requirements between September 1, 2006, and August 31, 2007, are eligible to apply to this prestigious two-year paid fellowship program working with federal agencies. This leadership development program includes 80 hours of training each year, challenging rotations, accelerated promotions, and opportunities to network between agencies.

**PMF workshops will provide information about the program and outline the application procedures. Please contact Office of Career Services to see when the next available workshop is scheduled.**

History
Since the inception of the Presidential Management Internship program in 1977, over 6,000 Presidential Management Interns have been hired by all cabinet departments and more than 50 federal agencies. Many of these PMIs are now high-ranking federal officials and managers who affect the lives of Americans. Due to the successful reputation and legacy of the newly re-named PMF program and the students who have been hired through it, many federal agencies have made the PMF program a cornerstone of their succession and workforce planning of the future. SPEA alumni have been very successful in obtaining positions as PMF finalists, with past students serving in the EPA, Department of Education, Office of Management and Budget, Department of Labor, the Mint, Department of the Interior, the State Department, Agency for International Development, and elsewhere.

The Application Process
The application process (application, résumé, and accomplishment record) for the PMF program is completed online.

Students wishing to be nominated by SPEA must complete and submit the following by October 15th:
  1. On-line application at www.pmf.opm.gov. (In the Nominating Coordinator's Information Section, list Melissa Jackson, Career Professional, meaedwar@indiana.edu, 812-856-2039 in each of the appropriate fields.)
  2. On-line resume builder.
  3. Again, at www.pmf.opm.gov, an Accomplishment Record addressing separately these three competencies:
    • Analytical thinking
    • Demonstrated leadership, and
    • Interpersonal and team skills

Student Notification
Students will be notified via e-mail by PMF and via letter by SPEA, no later than November 1st of their status whether nominated or not nominated. Nominated candidates will then be evaluated by PMF-trained assessors on each of the competencies in their Accomplishment Record.

The Office of Personnel Management will inform students whether or not they have passed the pre-screening of the Accomplishment Record. Those passing the pre-screening will be notified in November or December of their exact assessment center location and the date in January or February they should report to the center.

If interested in the PMF Program, please attend one of the workshops. If you have additional questions any time after the workshop, please stop by Office of Career Services and see Melissa Jackson (meaedwar@indiana.edu) or call 855-9639 to set up an appointment.
