Accomplishments


Graduation and Awards Ceremonies

May 2005 Graduation

undergrad procession We celebrated the transition from student to alum at the beginning of May. This year SPEA hosted three separate ceremonies to celebrate the accomplishments of our students graduating with undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees.

  • 28 students were awarded BS in Public Affairs degrees with a major in Environmental Management
  • 9 students were awarded BS in Environmental Science degrees
  • 35 students were awarded MS in Environmental Science degrees; 14 of these students also received an MPA, and 1 of these MSES students also received a JD.
  • 21 students were awarded MPA degrees with concentrations in Environmental Policy and Natural Resources Management.
  • 5 students received Ph.D. in Environmental Science degrees. The diversity of their thesis topics, along with the list of faculty publications and presentations above, begin to illustrate the wide range of research in Environmental Science and Policy underway at SPEA:
    • Aaron J. Coby—“Microbial Fe- (HYDR) Oxide Reduction: Effects on Zn Speciation and Interactions with Nitrate Reduction”
    • Maxine E. Davis—“The Atmospheric Chemistry of Acetone and alpha- and beta-Pinene”
    • William D. Hafner—“Source Apportionment and Atmospheric Transport of Persistent Organic Pollutants Near the Great Lakes”
    • Nathan D. Vogt—“Mechanisms of Land-Cover Change in Uganda: Longer Term Analyses of the Role of Institutional Arrangements”
    • Craig A. Wayson—“Carbon Cycling in a Mid-Latitude Deciduous Forest: Spatial and Temporal Dynamics”

March 2005 Student and Faculty Awards Event

We celebrated the successes of both students and faculty at the annual SPEA Awards Ceremony held on Sunday, March 6.

  • Matt Auer, Vicky Meretsky and Bob Kravchuk received the 2005 Trustees Teaching awards
  • Matt Auer also received Indiana University’s prestigious President’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
  • Henk Haitjema and Charlie Wise received the graduate level teaching awards
  • Diane Henshel and Clint Oster received the undergraduate level teaching awards
  • David Cox received the Adjunct faculty teaching award
  • Roberta Burns and Derek Kauneckis received the Ph.D. student teaching awards

undergrad procession In addition to teaching awards, a long list of scholarships and fellowships were awarded to current students. The recipients of scholarships and fellowships with some emphasis on the environment are noted below.

  • The Daniel E. Willard Fellowship in Wetlands Research was awarded to Ross Brittain and Sarah Sauter.
  • The Melissa Laney Clark Fellowship was awarded to Tymeri Schleicher.
  • The Izaak Walton League Scholarship was awarded to Michael Young.
  • The Charles Bonser Scholarship was awarded to Richard Bakewell, David Fuente and Melinda Roberts.

Students in environmental programs receiving awards for the highest GPA were Jennifer Hoponick (BSPA/MSES), Megan Hill (BSES/MSES), Ross Brittain (MSES/MPA), and Nidhi Pratap Rana (MSES/MPA)
