We are proud to present the first issue of Environmental Science Report, a communication of the Environmental Science and Policy (ESAP) faculty at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA). Our students and alumni are familiar with our first-rate educational and research programs in environmental science, but for those of you who don't know us too well let me introduce these.
The School of Public and Environmental Affairs has pioneered environmental science education and research at Indiana University. In 1975 we started with the Master's of Science in Environmental Science (MSES), in 1985 we added the Ph.D. in Environmental Science, and in 1998 the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (BSES) came online. SPEA and the College of Arts and Sciences jointly administer the BSES. These programs are staffed with eleven full-time environmental science faculty, five full-time environmental policy faculty, and numerous adjunct faculty members from other campus departments and the profession. SPEA also administers several dual degree programs combining the MSES with a degree in public affairs, geological sciences, biology, and law.
Last month, we welcomed our new dean, Astrid E. Merget, who succeeds A. James Barnes. During his tenure of twelve years, the School grew to national prominence and the environmental science program anearly doubled in size.
Environmental Science Report will appear twice a year and is meant to keep readers informed about our educational programs and research. In this and future issues you will find stories about the job experiences of our alumni, the research activities of our faculty, and the educational experiences of our students.
