Frequently Asked Questions About STEPSQ: How much Spanish do I need to know to participate in STEPS? How will this be assessed? A: To take the courses Bilingual Language Acquisition or Diversity in Clinical Practice, no Spanish knowledge is required. At least intermediate knowledge of Spanish is required to take the Spanish Language Acquisition course. To participate in STEPS fully, including all courses and clinical practica, fluency in Spanish is required. This includes high-intermediate proficiency in listening and speaking skills as measured by the ACTFL test, which will be administered to interested students over the phone prior to admission to the STEPS program. Ability to read and write in Spanish is also expected. Q: When will I be contacted for an interview for STEPS? A: All students interested in the STEPS bilingual program, and who have indicated this in their application statement of purpose and have e-mailed Dr. Raquel Anderson (raanders@indiana.edu) will be contacted for a phone interview before the Department makes its formal admission decision. As soon as your application is complete, we will contact you to schedule your interview. We expect that these will take place from mid-January to the end of February. The Department typically sends letters of admission in March. Q: How do I indicate my interest in the STEPS program? A: Interested students should indicate their interest in their statement of purpose included in their application, and e-mail the STEPS director, Dr. Raquel Anderson (raanders@indiana.edu) informing that they have applied to our master’s program in speech-language pathology. Q: Will I get special certification as a result of participating in the STEPS program? A: At the present time, ASHA does not offer special certification as a bilingual SLP. However, students who participate fully in all aspects of STEPS will receive a formal letter, suitable for use with licensing agencies and employers, indicating that they have participated in the program, have taken coursework about bilingual SLP, and have completed numerous practicum experiences geared toward working with the Latino population in schools. Students will also qualify for licensure as an SLP in Indiana’s public schools. Students wishing to obtain a bilingual schools credential in other states should contact those states to learn about licensure requirements there. Q: What courses are a part of STEPS?
