Departmental Research Support Program

Eligible recipients: $500.00 available for Graduate or Undergraduate students only, whether or not the student is working directly with a faculty mentor. Additional $500.00 available for faculty or student proposals.

Amount of awards: The amount of money available annually for this program is $500.00 for each category listed above. Requests between $25.00 and $500.00 will be considered. However, the funding criteria will be more stringent for large requests that would use up the majority of the funds in any one year. The intention is to support pilot projects by purchasing testing materials, small items of equipment or other materials or supplies that are needed for a proposed research project, and for which no other sources of funds are available. Successful pilot results often make it possible to compete effectively for university or federal funds.

Criteria: The primary criteria will be the likelihood that the project can actually be completed and that it will yield a useful increment to our knowledge of a communication disorder, its assessment, treatment, or underlying mechanisms. Priority will be given to clinical research proposals. Regarding student proposals, preference will be given to new projects developed by student investigators, or students collaborating with a faculty mentor, over requests for supplementary support for ongoing projects.

Purpose: The primary purpose of this funding program is to facilitate the pursuit of interesting research projects that might otherwise be stalled for lack of small amounts of needed research support, and to make modest amounts of research funding available on a much shorter request-to-award time table than that typical of most other funding sources. In addition, travel funds for students presenting research at professional conferences will be considered as supplementary to the Travel Awards made through COAS.

Submission Dates: Proposals for research support will be reviewed within a maximum of one month after their submission, and the funding decision will be made as part of the review process. Proposals will be accepted at any time during the calendar year. Travel funds may be requested using the application for COAS Travel funds in October and April, particularly whan COAS funds are denied.
Completion Date: Upon completion of the proposal, the investigator should submit a very brief summary to the Research and Doctoral Training Team stating the results of the project and the use of the funds awarded.

Format of Proposal: While brevity is appreciated, more detailed proposals will be expected for larger-scale requests. In general, successful proposals should include answers to the usual questions: What is the specific area of research, what question is being raised, what answers to that question have been given by past research, what method will be used, and what will be the consequences of the project if it is successful? A letter should be included from the faculty mentor, if there is one, indicating the degree to which the project is student-inspired, or is mainly an extension of the faculty member's previous research. (The latter type of projects will be considered for funding, although in some cases, they may be given lower priority than student-generated projects.)

Proposals should include the following components:

  1. Title
  2. Investigator(s)
  3. Date submitted
  4. Completion date (projected)
  5. Abstract (1-2 pages, answering questions raised above)
  6. Itemized budget
  7. Letter from faculty mentor, if required.
