Developing as a professional involves a combination of academic preparation and practical field assignments. Foundations, attitude development, and competencies provided in the classroom are tested by the student through practical experiences
beyond the classroom. Therefore, the purpose of this requirement for the B.S.
Degree in Recreation, Park and Tourism Studies is to explore the various leisure service agencies through
paid and/or volunteer services.
320 Hours Requirements
- 320 hours practical experience (equivalent to
an eight week full-time position) – spread across at
least 2 different field settings, 100 of which must be in a setting
related to your option.
- Completed prior to actually beginning in HPER 363 internship.
- Conducted in a recreation, park, sport, tourism or therapeutic recreation
services setting involving leadership, programming, or operational experiences.
- Volunteer or paid.
- Completed any time after high school graduation.
- Up to 25 hours for required course field projects (R277 and R367) may also
be credited toward this requirement. For verification of hours, students must submit a "320
Hours Practical Field Experience Requirement
Form" available in the departmental office (HPER 133)
- Completed report forms should be submitted to the student's
option faculty advisor. Students are encouraged to keep a
duplicate copy of each form for their file and portfolio.

The following are suggested agencies in the Bloomington area that students may contact to inquire about the possibility of engaging in field experience hours. (Note: Students may use any sport related agency from other locales and/or in their own hometown for the fulfillment of this requirement.)
