The property, a fin de siècle house built for a prosperous merchant and his family, was gifted to the University by Mr. Murat Megalli as the "home" for an American research center dedicated to the study of the Central Asian region. As such, it joins the l'Institut Français d'Études sur l'Asie Centrale (IFÉAC) in Tashkent and UNESCO's International Institute for Central Asian Studies (IICAS) in Samarkand in the establishment of an international scholarly presence in the heart of Central Asia.
