The Midwest Games is a recently started annual sporting social event where colleges in the Midwest gather. The unique thing about this is that the Games are focused on the Singaporean Student Associations in these colleges. This gives fellow Singaporeans the opportunity to meet their kind in a completely foreign land. Being in a foreign country halfway across the world is intimidating indeed. Having familiar people around you will definitely aid in the "settling-down" process. The MWG gives such Singaporeans the chance to share stories and experiences with each other and at the same time, relieve some steam from the pressure-cooker of college life. Students can engage in Singlish conversations, talk about home and just have fun.
Aside from the social aspect of the Games, there is the competitive side to it as well, with Midwest colleges competing in various sports for a year's worth of bragging rights. This year, 2007, IU and Purdue are proud to co-plan the event, with IU holding the event in Bloomington, Indiana. Our schools hope that this year's Games will emulate the brief yet successful history of the MWG and set the standard for more Games to come.
