USAID/Afghanistan
Higher Education Project (HED)
Afghanistan is located in
central Asia and bounded by Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan,
Tajikistan, China, Pakistan, and Iran. Its history
dates back to the empires of Persia and Alexander the Great.
Today the country is a republic with Kabul as its capital.
The USAID Afghanistan Higher Education
Project's strategic objective is to rehabilitate and
strengthen the capacity of the education system by focusing
on improved teaching and capacity building at the tertiary
level resulting in improved quality pre-service and
in-service teacher education for secondary school teachers.
Indiana University's Center for Social
Studies and International Education is providing leadership
for a 5 year program to design a master's degree program
for those who will have key roles in developing the capacity
of Afghan universities to both train their own education
faculty and train secondary school teachers. Cohorts
of Afghan higher education faculty will study at Indiana
University to earn a master's degree in education. The
faculty will earn degrees in language education with an
emphasis in English as a second language instruction.
Dr. Terrence Mason, director of the Center
for Social Studies and International Education and associate
professor of education, heads the project. Dr. Mitzi Lewison,
associate professor of language education at Indiana
University, coordinates the curriculum for the master's
degree program and oversees student academic
progress.
