Mathematics Teacher Training Project

The goal of the mathematics teacher training project is to prepare Korean secondary mathematics teachers to implement problem solving based, investigative teaching methods in their classrooms. Participants observe, discuss, analyze, and evaluate a variety of teaching methods that emphasize active student participation and conceptual understanding.  The teachers gain a familiarity with current theory and practice in education assessment.  They also introduced to the U.S. educational system, methods of curriculum development, and recent research in mathematics education.  The project is guided by five thematic areas:

  1. Problem Solving and Problem Posing

  2. Reflecting on Teaching

  3. Learning Tools

  4. Integrating Mathematics and Other Subject Areas

  5. Curriculum Materials and Teaching Tools

Participants have the opportunity to directly experience active learning based on key concepts and learning principles in mathematics through a series of mathematics inquiry sessions and workshops that are accompanied by guided reflection sessions.

Lecture topics for this training project include:

  • Introduction to the U.S. Educational System

  • Current Theory and Practice in Educational Assessment

  • National and International Mathematics Tests and Scores

  • Research Review:  Teacher Education and Critical Friends Groups
