LINDO Overview

LINDO is an acronym for Linear INteractive Discrete Optimizer. It is designed as a flexible, friendly, and powerful linear programming system. It is originally designed for interactive computing, but it can be run in batch mode without modification.

LINDO is supported as "special purpose software" by University Computing Services. Documentation is available at the Center for Statistical and Mathematical Computing; the consultants there (812/855-4724) can answer basic to advanced questions.

Note: If you are a student using LINDO for a class exercise, questions about your class work should be directed first to your instructor or associate instructor.

LINDO Functionality: Good

Breadth of Functionality: Fair

Lindo is a specialized package, for linear and integer programming.

Reliability and Robustness: Excellent

Lindo has no bugs!

State of the Art: Fair

LINDO is a very good program for doing a particular sort of large calculation, but its interface might be considered dated.

User Friendliness: Good

Lindo is command-line driven. It has a very limited set of commands, which makes it easier to manage, and a very good help system.

LINDO Help: Good

Network-based help: None.

Program Help System: Good

The help system is easy to use, and contains examples.

To start the help system, type help.

Lindo Program Availability: Excellent

Lindo is available on UITS systems. For details, see the Math Software Availability page.

UITS may offer this software for personal and departmental purchases. See the Sales for more information.

LINDO Training and Support: Fair

Document Availability: Fair

Full documentation is available for reference and short term loan from various Software Manual Locations. Documents are also available for reference at the UITS Stat/Math Center.

Training Availability: None

Lindo is used for several courses in the School of Business, whose instructors normally provide information for their students.

User Goup: None

There is no formal Lindo user's group.

Consulting support is available from Stat/Math Consulting from 9 am to 5 pm (M-F) via email, phone, and for walkins (an appointment is recommended for walkin consulting). The UITS HelpDesk and STC consultants may also provide some very basic support.

Other Consulting Support: Fair

Lindo is used for several courses in the School of Business, so a good deal of information is available "through the grapevine."
