How do I figure out 7002 error in SPSS?
Software Consultant
This document explains how the 7002 error occurs in SPSS, what problem it has, and how users fix the error.
1. 7002 Error and Symptom
When you launch SPSS with the 7002 error, the output window will pop up and give you following message (Figure 1). The pop-up also reports symptom number 26.
There appears to be a license for SPSS for Windows, but it is invalid.
Figure 1. 7002 Error
Now, you cannot read data sets or run analyses in SPSS. Even if you run the License Authorization Wizard again, you will get the same error message. Uninstalling and reinstalling SPSS does not work at all.
2. What Causes the 7002 Error?
This error occurs when the system date of the computer has been tampered. SPSS can detect if the computer's system date has been set back greater than 24 hours.
Here are two valuable lessons of using SPSS: (1) When installing SPSS, make sure system date and time is correct and (2) do not change system date AFTER SPSS has been installed.
3. How to Correct the Problem?
You have to remove time tampering information in your computer. The information remains even if you rerun the License Authorization Wizard or reinstall SPSS.
Unfortunately, there is no simple solution. You have to contact SPSS Inc. directly at support@spss.com. SPSS Inc. will reply with a license code file attached. You must provide following information in your email to SPSS.
- Serial number
- Authorization code
- Locking code
For the serial number and authorization code, see the back of your SPSS CD sleeve. For the locking code, run the echoid.exe utility in the SPSS directory (e.g., c:/Program Files/SPSS13/). You may click Start→Run and type in cmd in a dialog box to get the Command Prompt (Figure 2). Note that the license code is tied to your computer with a locking code. That is, the code is unique and varies across computers.
Figure 2. Getting Your License Code
When you receive the response from SPSS, download the license code file –t_xxxxx.lic and save to the SPSS directory.
You also need to download a utility from SPSS ftp site to reset the license code or remove time tampering information.
ftp://ftp.spss.com/pub/spss/windows/lsclean.zip
Extract and place (overwrite) the lsclean.exe in the SPSS directory. If you want to keep the old file, rename to lsclean.exe.old.
Now, you are ready to reset the license code and clean the time tampering information hidden in your computer. From the Command Prompt window, run the following command.
lsclean –t_xxxxx.lic
The lsclean command generates the clean.log file that reports the result of execution. Run the following command to take a look at the result.
type clean.log
If the message says 1. Cleaned time tampering information from the system., the execution was successful and the license code was reset. If you get a message 1. LSCLEAN license is expired., contact SPSS Inc. again to request another file.

4. What is the Next Step?
Now, uninstall SPSS completely and reinstal again.
If you just run the License Authorization Wizard and re-license your SPSS, you will get error 868 and 801 output window whenever you run SPSS (Figure 4). You can read data sets and run analyses without any problem. But we do not recommend this easy approach since error messages tend to bother users.

To uninstall the SPSS completely, click Start→Settings→Control Panel→Add or Remove Programs. Select SPSS for Windows from the list, and then click the Remove button on the right to uninstall the SPSS.
When uninstallation is complete, go to windows directory (e.g., c:\winnt\) to run the regedit.exe for the Windows Registry Editor. Alternatively you may click Start→Run and type in regedit in a dialog box. You may back up registry file before changing it in case of emergency.
In the Registry Editor, click Edit→Find or press Ctrl+F to get the Find window poped up. Type in Find Next button (see Figure 5).
Figure 5. Windows Registry Editor
When the Registry Editor finds and highlights a registry containing spss (see Figure 6), press the delete button (or click Edit→Delete) to remove the value. And then press F3 or (click Edit→Find Next) to search other registries.
Repeat this procedure until there is no registry entry having spss. You need to repeat between 20 to 30 times depending on your system settings. This is what guninstall SPSS completely.
Now, you are ready to re-install SPSS. As commonly requested by Microsoft product, we recommend rebooting your computer before re-installation.
