Campus Sustainability Advisory Board

Our Mission:

The mission of the Campus Sustainability Advisory Board is to provide broad-based academic and operational support for Indiana University’s Office of Sustainability. The Office seeks to develop a broad, interdisciplinary academic and operational program that represents a systematic institutional effort to address large-scale issues of human-environment interaction on a local, regional, and global scale, as developed in the January 2008 Campus Sustainability Report. The Office adopts the United Nations’ definition of sustainability as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Objectives | Back to Top

Specifically, the Board will work with the entire university community to meet the following objectives:

Academic Initiatives

To build an integrated program of academic research, undergraduate and graduate education, co-curricular and service-learning opportunities, and community outreach that will move Indiana University Bloomington into a position of national leadership in sustainability studies.

Energy and Built Environment

Energy and Built Environment Working Group strives to raise awareness of IUB’s energy use among faculty, staff, and students and implement strategies through behavior modification and innovative building design and engineering principles to maximize the efficiency of on-campus production and distribution systems as well as reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmental Quality and Land Use

Through research, self-reporting, and adoption of environmentally sensitive land-use practices we seek to help IUB use resources sustainably and improve environmental quality and to protect the health of citizens on campus, in Bloomington, and beyond.

Food

To promote dining options for IUB’s students, staff, and faculty that support sustainable agricultural and food distribution practices while minimizing energy use and waste generation.

Recycling and Resource Use

To raise awareness of resource use and recycling on the IUB campus among faculty, staff, and students, implement strategies to enhance campus recycling systems, and promote responsible resource use through green purchasing, conservation, and smart technology.

Sustainable Computing

To leverage resources, skills and knowledge at the university, unit and individual level with the goal of lowering the environmental impact of our technological practices and effectively employ technologies to lower the environmental impact of the campus and its constituents.

Transportation

To promote a sustainable transportation system that will provide safe access and mobility for students, faculty, staff and visitors, and to ensure that individuals have a broad range of safe and convenient transportation options to walk, bicycle, carpool, or ride public transit to and around campus.
