Good News in Campus Sustainability!
June 2017
From the Director's Desk

Bad news about sustainability on the national and international level is easy to find and it can contribute to feelings of despair and hopelessness. Hidden in the fast-flowing end-of-semester rush and the national news cycle was a raft of good news in the month of May for SustainIU. You don't have to look far to be encouraged. Join us as we take a good news break.

We marked a decade of Student Sustainability Interns with the hiring of our Summer '17 Cohort. Over 300 intern alumni are now working around the world to improve it. We celebrated this milestone by launching a new outreach and engagement program, the Indiana Sustainability Development Program, placing 15 McKinney Family Sustainability Fellows and Scholars with employers across the corporate, local government, and non profit sectors in Indiana. A three-day sustainability training "boot camp" sent them on their way in early May.

Our annual Sustainability Tracking Assessment Rating System report (STARS) revealed that IUB has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 39% from 2010 levels, and IU received national accolades for sustainability courses and faculty research.

It's incredible what we can accomplish together. None of this is possible without the persistence and ingenuity of our interns, the hard work of hundreds of faculty and staff choosing sustainability daily, and the support of our generous volunteers and donors. If you enjoyed this good sustainability news break and would like to be a part of the solution, please join us by volunteering with SustainIU or giving to the SustainIU fund.
