Peer Educator Program Overview
The Sustainability Peer Educator Program (SPEP) trains undergraduate student leaders to deliver sustainability lessons and workshops to their peers. This program is intended to improve sustainability literacy, encourage the adoption of sustainable behaviors, and foster a culture of sustainability among students. The initial topics of focus will be waste minimization, energy conservation, and water conservation. The initial target audiences will be residence halls and the Greek community.
Peer educators will support sustainability education in three ways: 1) By drawing on student feedback to design and teach lessons and workshops that provide peers a basic understanding of sustainability and its importance as well as tools for adopting sustainable behaviors, 2) By coordinating with peers and campus partners to identify and remove barriers to adopting sustainable behaviors in each specific living environment, and 3) By connecting students to other sustainability initiatives on campus.
We are currently seeking six undergraduate students for the 2014-2015 academic year program. The compensation will be $10 per hour, and peer educators will work 10 hours per week.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Attend training and planning meetings as designated by the Office of Sustainability (IUOS)
- Set a good example and mentor peers informally by adopting and promoting a sustainable lifestyle
- Lead sustainability lessons and workshops weekly as requested
- Answer questions submitted via email or social media
- Represent SPEP and IUOS at related events
- Collaborate with campus partners to strategize on both new and existing efforts
- Track and report changes in sustainability literacy among members of the target audience
- Assist coordinator in reviewing relevant literature and producing new educational materials
- Strong interest in sustainability and education
- Strong communication skills
- Strong leadership skills
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
- Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly and resolve problems
- Ability to articulate complex issues, moderate nuanced conversations, and advise accordingly
- Flexible schedule, availability to work some evenings and weekends
- Background in education, social psychology, environmental studies, or sustainability
- Experience collaborating with diverse groups of individuals at the college level
- Good management skills and confidence guiding others
