The Office of Sustainability is hiring seven new interns through the Internship Program in Sustainability, mentored by IUOS, the Campus Sustainability Advisory Board (CSAB), and campus faculty and staff.

Hoosier to Hoosier Sale InternThis year marks the fifth Hoosier to Hoosier Community Sale, an effort which in 2016 collected 60 tons of reusable items from IUB residence halls, Greek houses and off campus properties. The sale of these items back to the community raised over $40,000 for Cutters Soccer Club and sustainability efforts at the City of Bloomington Department of Economic and Sustainable Development, the IU Office of Sustainability and IU Residential Programs and Services. This internship will build on the previous academic year intern's work, with the goals of: (1) capturing more reusable items before they enter the waste stream, and (2) increasing the educational nature of the project through the integration of service learning classes and student organization programming. NOTE: Interview team will prioritize applicants with availability to begin in April 2017. Applicants should be energetic, self-starters, organized, and good at leading volunteers.

Communications and Marketing InternThis position works directly with the Project Coordinator and is aimed at the development of written, visual, and graphic media to publicize campus sustainability efforts. This intern will create and maintain a social media strategic plan using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, take and edit photos, create graphics for the web and print, and maintain the IUOS newsletter and blog to highlight current events and initiatives. Strong journalism, creative writing, or graphic design background required. Experience using Adobe Creative Suite, strong graphic design skills, photography skills, attention to detail and grammatical accuracy required. Experience with coding, DreamWeaver, and/or with Cascade’s Web Content Management System (WCMS) is preferred, though not required.

2020 Transitions Lab Intern: The 2020 Transitions Lab is IU Bloomington's living, learning, lab for sustainability. The lab fosters collaboration between university academics, operations and the broader Hoosier community to advance high impact student learning and sustainability. The Transitions Lab intern will work directly with the Associate Director of Sustainability to formalize Transitions Lab work in several areas. First, the intern will be involved in assessing the undergrad research program and collaborating with faculty and staff to identify new research projects for fall 2017. Second, the intern will be involved in planning for expanded community collaborations through the lab. Finally, the intern will have an opportunity to work on press and communication related to the Transitions Lab. Successful applicants will be organized and interested in higher education and sustainability research.

Transportation Working Group InternIndiana University was among the first 20 Bicycle Friendly Universities in America and received a bronze certification. IU recently reapplied for a new Bicycle Friendly University ranking and IU’s first Bicycle Master Plan is due to be completed soon. The academic-year intern will work with the Transportation Working Group to identify and implement opportunities presented by these two recent efforts and assist with further analysis of potential bike sharing and other active transportation programs. This intern will also assist with the Transportation Working Group meetings and share findings with other campuses in the IU system to assist with their bicycle planning as called for in the Bicentennial Strategic Plan.

Energy and The Built Environment Working Group InternThis intern will work with the Energy and the Built Environment Working Group, IU’s director of energy management and utilities and the university director of sustainability to assist in strategic planning and to assist with tracking IUB's progress toward its energy goals as called for in the Bicentennial Strategic Plan. Work will include research of renewable energy options, evaluating data related to energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and utility costs. This intern will also help manage the Energy and the Built Environment Working Group, including facilitating meetings, assisting with new member recruitment and retention, providing research support, and supporting programming and implementation.

Resource Use and Recycling Intern: This intern will continue the work of previous No Waste Program coordinators, improving and developing programs to reduce the waste stream, improve reuse programs and services, and improve the recycling landscape on campus (including composting), through education, trainings, infrastructure, and planning. In addition to new programming, the No Waste Program coordinator also helps manage the Resource Use and Recycling Working Group, including facilitating meetings, recruiting new members, and supporting programming originating in the working group.

Utilities and Behavior Change Intern: This intern will continue the Utility Information Group's ongoing efforts to increase water and energy conservation on the IUB campus. Duties will include examining usage data for trends and inconsistencies, developing communication materials on water and energy conservation and continuing the process of weatherizing utility data to support conservation programming in small buildings. This intern will also plan and coordinate the Fall 2017 Energy Challenge. NOTE: Interview team will prioritize applicants with availability to continue in the 2017-2018 academic year.
