Academic T'ai Chi Ch'uan T'ai Chi Ch'uan classes are offered to IU students through the Kinesiology Department's Elective Sports Martial Arts Program in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Part of the curriculum since 1992, these classes were the first credit courses in T'ai Chi Ch'uan offered by any Big Ten School, making IU T'ai Chi Ch'uan the oldest, largest and most comprehensive academic T'ai Chi Ch'uan program in the US. Each year approximately 250 students participate in Instructor Charles Pearce's T'ai Chi Ch'uan classes, learning William C.C. Chen's Body Mechanics of T'ai Chi Ch'uan Yang style 60 movement form. A senior student of Master Chen, Pearce emphasizes concentration and attentional skills, as well as the development of effective movement for all sports, and practical self-defense skills. Pearce has achieved the highest level of T'ai Chi Ch'uan teacher's certification and has over fifteen years of teaching experience. His training includes Karate, Hapkido and Tai Chi Ch'uan.
