Indiana University activated the seventeenth chapter of Tau Beta Sigma for the first time on November 19, 1949. Due to a lack of service projects in the early 70's, the Rho Chapter deactivated for several years. At that time, there was only one band in which women were allowed to participate. When the Indiana University Band Department opened the band programs to women in 1974, Rho was quickly reactivated with the help of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi.

Rho is now a valuable asset to the Department of Bands. Members assist at being Secretary for a day, raising money to purchase items such as music folders, holding receptions after band concerts, and doing other service projects for the various bands. In the spring of 1997, Rho activated its first Brother of the Sisterhood, and currently has many male members. Becoming co-ed has brought many positive changes to the chapter, including new understandings and friendships.

In the past two decades, Rho has become a prominent chapter in the North Central District. Members of Rho have held many different district offices in the past. Rho has won awards for Membershipmania and an Outstanding Service Project. Our chapter, along with out brothers from Kappa Kappa Psi, hosted the Kadenza, the NCD newsletter, for the 97-98 school year. Our chapters have also hosted Conventions on a District and National level. The most recent was the 2002 North Central District Convention. The chapters have also been very involved with the District Website. Rho has been a strong chapter of Tau Beta Sigma and we continually strive to support the ideals of our sisters before us.
