Freshman Learning Project

Each year since 1998, the Freshman Learning Project (FLP), the flagship faculty learning community on Indiana University's Bloomington campus, has led small cohorts of faculty members through an intensive learning process about teaching first-year students and gateway courses. The FLP experience culminates in a two-week seminar that is designed to help faculty understand the obstacles faced by students in their introductory classes and to develop new ways to help students overcome these obstacles. Approximately one dozen faculty members are invited to attend each year, based on nominations by their peers. If you have any questions, please contact us. |

The Indiana University Freshman Learning Project (FLP) supports faculty in their efforts to develop new responses to the challenges of stimulating learning in large first year and introductory courses. The FLP was cited by Time Magazine as one of the programs that made Indiana University Bloomington its research university “college of the year.” This program is sponsored by Instructional Support Services , and the Office of Academic Affairs & Dean of the Faculties . |

Students often stagger from one discipline to another, without any idea of why the mental operations that work in one field do not yield positive results in another. In order to help more students to make this transition and make the knowledge of our disciplines available to more of them, the Fellows of the Freshman Learning Project go through a seven part process designed to increase learning in a course. |

The positive impact of the program has been manifested in specific innovations in the Fellows' classrooms and in the spread of new approaches to teaching across the campus. |

The following articles share a number of valuable teaching ideas and are representative of insights fellows gain from FLP. The FLP program also assumes that the spread of such forms of teaching more broadly within the university and beyond will have a positive impact on all undergraduate learning, and the first-year in particular. |
