Teaching and Professional Interests
Teaching Interests: Media Management, International Business Journalism,
Advertising
Professional Interests: Developing undergraduate, graduate, and executive
education programs in business and international relations
As a faculty member and Director of the Telecommunications Management
Institute, my primary area of interest resides in international
media management development, in both commercial and educational settings.
I have an active media outreach practice in one of the world’s
most dynamic economies, China, where I have developed a program of media
consultation and academic courses in advertising, international marketing,
and telecommunications policy at several of that nation’s leading
universities. In my consulting efforts, I have met with Chinese policy
makers, industry representatives, and academic officials.
In the spring of 2008 I will be returning to China to introduce a specialized
program in business journalism. The program will train students
to report knowledgeably on economic activity by individuals, businesses,
governments, and non-governmental sectors, and how to maximize the technological
advantages of various media, including web-based and other networked media
platforms.
Before transitioning into the academic world, my career focused on developing
commercial television stations in major markets serving, in the aggregate,
more than ten million U.S. television households. On a pro bono
basis, I developed a series of immersive training practica for media professionals – managers
and journalists alike – from developing countries whose political
and economic systems were re-orienting themselves to a western media business
model. These countries include Lithuania, Hungary, Romania, India,
and Guyana.
My teaching techniques focus on de-mystifying the interdisciplinary nature
of the global media business. These techniques focus on a teaching
philosophy which demands that students apply systematic, analytic, and
ethical thinking to the kaleidoscopic landscape of today’s global
media world.
