MTV: the proverbial yardstick

In 1981, MTV and music videos were the latest novelty. MTV's programming of 24-hour a day videos was considered entertainment in itself. Today viewers need more to keep them tuned in.

MTV replaced much of its music video lineup with news, reality and game shows, documentaries and even wrestling.

CMT, VH1 & MTV augment their music videos with additional information.

  • Pop-up Video
  • VH1 Behind the Music (Features artists whose careers were boosted by MTV)

Inserting additional information into programming has grown popular with other networks:

  • On American Movie Classics' program, “DVD-TV,” movies are offered with facts and trivia, presented at the bottom of the screen, related to the talent or production.
  • CNN Headline News and CNBC networks resembles an enhanced television display. The primary image is squeezed into a corner, while weather reports, stock quotes and news bulletins border the edges.

Even without interactive set-top-boxes, stations are trying to squeeze as much additional information as possible into their programming.
