Index/syllabus - Schedule

DUE DATE: Tuesday, June 11
Objective: Create an original program, suitable for airing on
network television or for theatrical release. (You may create a sequel
for an existing movie or an episode for an existing TV series.)
You will turn in a production packet, which will include:
- A Program proposal
- Treatment (Entire production)
- Script Excerpt (From opening scene, 6 - 10 pages)
- Storyboard (Opening scene)

Program Proposal:
The Program Proposal is a key document in the production process. Its
style varies, but for this class include:
- Title
- Objective Example: After watching "Feeding the Needy,"
viewers will understand 3 things they can do to help feed needy chidren
and feel motivated to take action in their community.
- Target audience (who are you trying to reach)
- Format (TV drama, major motion picture, documentary, talk show,
etc)
- Length (run time)
- Description (1-paragraph description of program. Think TV guide
summary)
Treatment:
Cover Page
- Identify the tile, medium and author at the top.
- identify what type the program is or its origin.
- Follow this by a log line
- After this comes your story
Body Structure:
- Typed, double spaced, pages numbered
- Each act must be indicated by a heading (Act I)
- You must adhere to a 3-act structure (unless you're producing a TV
movie)
- All scenes comprising each act must be numbered, given a title, and
a one line description of the purpose of the scene.
- Scenes must give a sense of beginning, middle, and end and reveal
their purpose
- No more than one paragraph per scene
- Each scene must be described in active voice, present tense language.
Example:
Act I
Scene 1 "Angie kills her tormentor"
Present tense, active voice paragraph long description of the first scene.
Scene 2 "Joan finishes her novel"
Present tense, active voice paragraph long description of the second
scene.
etc.
Script:
Write the first 6 pages of the script (no more than 10 please). Follow
the drama style script format.

Storyboard:
Storyboard the opening scene from your program.

Grading Criteria - 40 points total
We will look for the following, and will evaluate the quality of:
- Elements of Program Proposal (title, objective, target audience etc.)
- An opening that hooks the audience
- A protagonist the audience can relate to
- The motivation, mission, obstacles, and changes of the protagonist
- All the major and supporting characters
- A final crisis, climax and resolution to the story
- A clearly defined central conflict
- A clearly stated emotional tone and point of view
- A clear detailing of location and setting
- Title and Numbering of each scene
- Structure and Content of all the important Scenes and Acts
- The style and construction of the treatment and script.
- Language is present tense, dramatic, straightforward, and visual.
- Grammar, spelling & organization. More than 5 mistakes means a
loss in points.
