T351 Storyboard / Continuity Exercise
In this exercise you will create a 6-8 frame storyboard, shoot and edit
a sequence that demonstrates your understanding of continuity and shows
off your camera skills and framing techniques. Please note that this
project should illustrate your mastery of continuity (not discontinuity).
In other words, no jump-cuts or complexity-style editing.
You will shoot these during your lab time in small groups (2-3 people)
If you have three people in your group, you will shoot 3 sequences, one
for each group member.) Plan on shooting your own storyboard and having
your group members serve as talent if needed. In addition to gathering
shots for your sequence, you need to shoot a final "beauty” shot,
which you may use to roll credits over at the end of your production.
This shot does not have to count as one of your frames (so it can be
your 9th shot). Your final "beauty shot" should last at least
20 seconds or so to give you time to roll credits and fade to black.
You will probably want to thematically link this last shot to your sequence.
Start with an idea that's do-able and tells a story- something you can
shoot in an hour during lab. You may select your closing “beauty” shot
in the field, it doesn’t need to be in your storyboard. After you
show the instructor or AI your storyboards, your group may go out and
tape all of your sequences. Your completed production will be due the
following week.
Be sure to use a tripod unless you have a very good
reason not to.
You will be graded on the following:
- 6 – 8 frame storyboard. Be sure to bring 2 copies to lab and
make sure that below each frame you include a one line description
below. (5 points)
- Production & edited program (20 points)
- 1-page (minimum) critique
(5 points)
- Oututting your project:
Make a full-size, self-contained Quicktime Movie, and place it in the
Storyboard folder in the krauseT351 folder on TCNetScratch. Be sure not to
include color bars, countdown and a slate. However be sure to name the
movie after your login name or IU id. (jarkraus.mov for example)

- Minimum 6 shots - maximum of eight shots + closing "beauty" shot
