My research and teaching interests center on the economics of media and other communications industries, and more generally, on the economics of information. Most of my courses and research work have a policy or a business strategy focus. Among my recent topics are ownership and market structure in the cable television industry, the economics of the movie industry and the economics of violence in the media.

Bio

David Waterman is Professor in the Department of Telecommunications at Indiana University, Bloomington.  He has written widely on the economics of the cable television, motion picture, and other information industries. He is co-author of Vertical Integration in Cable Television (1997; MIT Press) with Andrew A. Weiss, and author of Hollywood’s Road to Riches (2005; Harvard University Press).  His articles on market structure and public policy toward the media, the economics of motion picture production and distribution, international trade in motion pictures and video products, and other topics have appeared in Information Economics and Policy, Journal of Communication, Journal of Econometrics, Telecommunications Policy, Federal Communications Law Journal, and other academic journals and edited books. His research has been supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Professor Waterman has presented his research in testimony before the U.S. Congress, and has served on expert panels or as a consultant for the Federal Communications Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Department of Justice, the General Accounting Office of the United States, and the Competition Bureau, Industry Canada.

Waterman is currently a Coordinating Editor of the journal, Information Economics & Policy.

He completed his B.A. in Economics at the University of Southern California and received a Ph.D. in Economics in 1979 from Stanford University. Before joining IU in 1993, Professor Waterman was a faculty member of the Annenberg School for Communication at USC. At USC, Professor Waterman taught in the Annenberg School's Communications Management Masters program and in the Department of Economics

David Waterman lives in Bloomington with his wife Sharon and their three children, Chloe, Jason, and Matthew.
