Nicole Martins, Assistant Professor, joined IU, 2008. B.S. Northeastern University, 2002; M.A., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2004; Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Speech Communication), 2008. Teaching interests: social and psychological effects of the mass media on youth, impact of media violence, impact of media on body image and eating disorders. Research interests: the social and psychological effects of mass media on children and adolescents. Current projects include a content analysis that examines depictions of social aggression on programs popular with children, a survey designed to link exposure to social aggression on television and children’s aggression in the classroom, and a longitudinal study examining the impact of the media on children’s self-esteem. Her work has been published in Communication Monographs and Health Communication. She was the Academy of Arts and Sciences Fred Rogers Memorial Research Grant recipient in 2007.
