Dr. Nicole Martins (Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2008) is an Assistant Professor in the Media School where she teaches courses focused on the child audience and media effects. Dr. Martins’ expertise concerns the social and psychological effects of the mass media youth. She has a longstanding interest on the effects of relationally aggressive portrayals in the media, as well the impact of the media on children’s self-esteem and body-image concerns. She has published over two dozen scholarly articles and book chapters, and her work appears in a wide-range of peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Health Communication and Journal of Experimental Child Psychology. Dr. Martins has received numerous top paper awards from the National Communication Association and International Communication Association, including the Outstanding Journal Article Award (co-authored with Barbara J. Wilson) from ICA’s Children, Adolescents, and Media Division in 2013. Dr. Martins is frequently quoted in national news outlets on topics related to children and media.
