Associate Professor, joined IU, 2003. Member of the Graduate Faculty and member of Core Faculty-Cognitive Science Program, Director of the Institute for Communication Research, B.A., Eastern Washington University, Radio-Television Management & Sales, 1989; M.S., Eastern Washington University, Communication, 1993; Ph.D., Indiana University, Mass Communications, 1998. Potter's research focuses on the impact of auditory elements on information processing of media, advanced communication science research methods including psychophysiological and neuroscience measures as indicators of cognitive and emotional responses to media, and the concept of advertising clutter and its influence on information processing. His research has been published in Media Psychology, Communication Research, Cognition and Emotion, Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Advertising Research, and Journal of Management Information Systems. He has been invited to lecture on media psychology topics in Korea, Australia, Amsterdam, England, and China. He has also given invited talks to the National Association of Broadcasters and the NAB Radio Show. Potter's experience in the radio industry as a promotions director, research director, and program director guides his undergraduate teaching interests in media programming and distribution strategies, media promotions and marketing, media management and advertising.
