Sheehan Memorial Award

The Sheehan Memorial Award is a $500 award presented annually to a student showing evidence of creativity in the production process.  All IU students who have done work in the Department of Telecommunications are eligible.  Although work done outside the Department is acceptable, works created in class, through independent projects, and for the department are given priority.  Applicants must submit an audiocassette, videotape, or CD/DVD of ten minutes or less in total length and provide a written description of the segments submitted.

Jennifer Byrne Shull Scholarship

This award in the amount of $500 is made in recognition of Jennifer Byrne Shull, one of the first women graduates of the Department of Telecommunications, which at the time was known as the Radio-TV Department.  Since her graduation in 1955, Jennifer Shull has become a successful casting director, and in 1992 received a lifetime achievement award by the Casting Society of America.

Funding for the Jennifer Byrne Shull Scholarship comes from a generous grant from the motion picture director Ray Stark, whose screen credits include "The Night of the Iguana", "Funny Girl", "Peggy Sue Got Married", and "Biloxi Blues".  Mrs. Shull has worked as the casting director for many of Ray Stark's films.

The scholarship is awarded to a senior woman majoring in Telecommunications who has distinguished herself in scholarship and service to the Department and to the University.

Norvelle joined the Indiana University faculty in 1925 and began to expand the theater curriculum and to produce plays.  During his career, Norvelle became active in theater on the national level and built the theater program at Indiana into one of the best in the nation.  He augmented the theater program at I.U. by founding the Brown County Playhouse in 1949 and the Showboat Majestic, a riverboat playhouse that operated on the Ohio River for six years, in 1959.  The Brown County Playhouse flourishes today.

The Norvelle Scholarship recipient(s) should embody the principles of scholarship and creativity exemplified by Norvelle.  Financial need is a consideration for this award.  Norvelle, remembering his school days, wanted to aid superior students desiring to complete their studies but who were in need of funds.
