-Frequently Asked Questions for Parents |
1. Are my son's academics going to get worse because he joins?
No. College is a completely different atmostphere than high school and it requires a different mindset and a better work ethic. The fraternity is able to provide other college students that can offer many opinions and guidance based on experience. Plus, Theta Chi retains high academic standards and ensures that if grades fall below a GPA of 2.7 that the student is put on an academic probation with the house and is required to complete a set number of study table hours until the student's grades come back up.
2. How much does a fraternity cost?
Every fraternity is different based on what the members in cooperation with their nationals have decided to make. Our house is one of the least expensive on campus and maintain a budget so that people don't have to pay more than is necessary. Dues are $300 per semester which is set by nationals. Also, rent is $7,000 a year which includes room and board and is set annually based on food, utility, and other operating costs. So being in a fraternity, at least this one, is comparable to living in the dorms or living in an apartment.
3. Will my son be hazed as a new member?
Absolutely not. The “philosophy” (if you want to call it that) of hazing is just the opposite of what we as men of Theta Chi stand for. Not only does hazing reinforce negative stereotypes, we strongly believe that it is destructive and harmful to the health of a chapter and its members. We build our brothers up, not tear them down.
4. What opportunities does my son have outside of the fraternity?
On a campus like IU, there are so many clubs and organizations that your child can join, and we encourage it! Every member is required to be in at least one organization outside of the fraternity and it's fun too. Not only do we want your son to join a group but you should be involved with your son and encourage him to explore his interests. Theta Chi is here for school first and fraternity second.
5. Are there places in the house that my son could study?
Yes. The house has a conference room that is designated as quiet hours 24/7. Others prefer to study in their own rooms or even to go to the library on campus.
6. What kind of people will my son be associating with?
Only the best. The types of guys that are Theta Chis have been hand picked to be some of the best and brightest in the greek system. Statisticly speaking, those students that go greek have a better graduation rate than those that decide not to go greek. That is because students that go greek have more dedication, purpose, and have a better support group to hold them accountable.
